Keep thinning hair at bay!

20:00 BTC 0 Comments

Yesterday we posted about thinning hair and how to treat it, well today we have a little more on the products suggested!

Phytax, Vitex, Trichogenesis or Minoxidil lotions are a treatments not a cure and if they do work, then you will be on them until you decide otherwise. These treatments have to be used regularly if you do not undertake a regular regime then you would be wasting your time and money. Whichever treatment you decide to use there is only a third of the population that will notice hair growth and you will need to apply daily for 12 months before you know if the treatment was successful. So why not try these treatments to slow down the rate of hair loss or even stimulate hair growth.

Alongside these topical treatments it is advisable to use products that will complement and not counteract the effects of the treatment such as menthol shampoo, menthol lotion, or astringents. For further information please visit our website www.birminghamtrichology.co.uk
If you have any quires please do not hesitate to contact us via the website on hair problems, recommended products or shipping abroad!

Thinning on top?

20:35 BTC 0 Comments

Do you suffer with thinning hair over the Crown region - male or female pattern Hair loss?

This condition is known as androgenic hair loss and affects equally as many women mean as men and how do you know if you have androgenic hair loss?

Place the heel of your hand on your front hairline with your fingers towards the Crown, if this area of your hair is thinning, then you suffer from androgenic changes. These changes can occur from puberty and adolescents and through the menopause.

The changes within the hair follicle are slow as each hair is naturally shed daily, when the new hair starts to emerge from the hair follicle, it grows finer and has a shorter growing period.  This is repeated many times and eventually the hair follicle dies. While thinning hair is in this transitional phase it is advisable to commence with a topical treatment. These topical treatments can be found on our website: www.birminghamtrichologycentre.co.uk

So what's the big deal on different types of wigs?!

21:24 BTC 0 Comments

What are the advantages and disadvantages of fibre, human hair or fibre hair mix wigs?
FIBRE
Advantages:
·        Appears to the naked eye as human hair
·        Feels like human hair as it is now manufactured to give irregular shape along length.
·        During wearing, moves like hair.
·        Reflects light just like hair.
·        Lightweight.
·        Does not become heavy when wet or subjected to atmospheric moisture.
·        Colour does not fade as quickly as human hair.
·        Fibre length does not have any effect the final cost.
·        Can be straight, wavy or curly with no effect on the cost.
·        Consistency of quality and colour.
Disadvantages:
·        Does not respond well to extreme temperatures such as from electrical styling equipment or hot water.
·        Some fibre requires moisture and needs to be sprayed daily.
·        Fibre is subjected to drying out which can lead to frizzing and matting.
·        Restricted in stock colours
HUMAN HAIR
Advantages:
·        Wide range of colours.
·        Wide range of lengths.
·        Can be straight, wavy or curly.
·        Can be professionally re-coloured.
Disadvantages:
·        European Human Hair, normally referred to as Caucasian hair, has not had the cuticles removed which can lead to matting.
·        Requires specialist cleaning and redressing by a wig maker.
·        Time consuming to care for.
·        Expensive, cost is governed by hair length, colour and availability.
·        Colour fades more quickly than fibre.
·        Much heavier in weight.
·        No guarantee of consistency in quality.

HAIR/FIBRE MIX
Advantages:
·        Reduces the overall weight of the wig.
·        Prolongs the finished hair style
·        Able to be shampooed and conditioned at home.
·        Allows for more colour variation
·        Helps to prevent fading

Disadvantages:
·        Fibre can become damaged if the wig is treated as human hair when being styled.

How are wigs fitted/attached?

16:42 BTC 0 Comments

Some ready-made wigs have Velcro® fasteners at the nape. There is one fastener on each side of the inside of the foundation at the nape allowing the wig size to be adjusted for a more comfortable fit.
Double Sided Clear Toupee Tape is a surgical adhesive tape which is popular and widely available in shaped strips or in rolls.

So what is a wig?

20:47 BTC 0 Comments

Wigs For Men, Women and Children.
What is a wig?
A wig is made from either human hair or synthetic fibre or a combination of both, attached to a net or polyurethane/latex foundation and covers the entire scalp from forehead to nape and from ear to ear. It can be constructed in many ways such as ready-made wefted or machine hand tied (off-the-peg), or made to measure and knotted (bespoke).
Bespoke wigs are generally made with human hair of European origin, with ready-made wigs of human hair being of oriental origin.  Within the ready-made wigs there can be a combination of human hair and fibre (synthetic) and it is not uncommon to have white fibre added to a human hair wig to give the appearance of a natural greying

Avulsion...what is it all about?

08:41 BTC 0 Comments

Are you worried about your hair after it has been pulled, torn or ripped out?

This is known as Avulsion, a medical term, to describe the sudden aggressive removal
of hair from the scalp.  In some cases the sudden trauma may affect the
underlying structure of the skin leading to permanent hair loss.

The condition avulsion must not be mistaken for prolonged traction due to the
prolonged periods or incorrect fitting during wearing of added hair, such as
hair extensions, hair weaves or permanent hair pieces/units is known as
traction alopecia.

Get some bloods!

18:34 BTC 0 Comments

It may be advisable to contact your Doctor about having a blood test if you are losing your hair to check your Ferritin level. The level should be maintained at a level of, 100 µg/L; as below this level it has been linked hair loss and a deterioration in hair condition. If you tests have come back lower than the suggested level it can be easily rectified with iron supplements.

Tritch-a-lilla...What'ah?

19:26 BTC 0 Comments

Trichotillomania is the repeatedly pulling, plucking and breaking of hair with fingers.  Trichotillomania is an obsessive-compulsive disorder andis normally caused by triggering factors such as emotional or physical stress. Emotional stress plays the biggest part in this.

Strategy
There are different strategies to try to prevent you from touching your hair, such as;
  1. Using rich hand cream that coats your fingers so that this, in turn, makes your hair feel smoother. You informed me that it is the roughness of the hair which  creates this desire to break the hair off.
  2. Using rich conditioners which coat the hair making the cuticle (outer protective layer) feel smooth to the touch.
  3. Dressing aids such as gels, mousses, waxes, hair sprays and leave in conditioners as these are also good for coating the outer cuticles.
  4. Wearing your hair up and using dressing aids so that you cannot get your fingers into the area to break hair off.
  5. Change the seat that you sit in whilst watching television or relaxing as it appears that it is always your left hand that goes up to the left and rear of your scalp.
  6. To agree a trigger word for when somebody sees you touching the area but not to make a big issue of this.
  7. If you break hair off, then you could put it into a bag at the end of each instance. Over time, you can look back at this and see how much you have broken off, as a way of hopefully monitoring and reinforcing a reduction.  However, do not count the individual hairs as this  in itself can be another compulsive behaviour which you do not want to set off.
  8. An alternative to keeping broken hairs is taking photographs of your hair to monitor any deterioration or improvement. In either case, you could agree a treat for yourself if you  have not  broken any hairs off in  set period.
  9. Relaxation is the best treatment, such as walking, swimming, cycling, dancing or such like -  all these take your mind off what you’re worrying about.  The golden rule to follow is that whatever that you are doing , if you start thinking about your hair,  then that is a good time to stop and try something different. For example, when you are watching the TV and find that your hand is going up into your hair this means that you are not focusing on the TV and your thoughts are drifting off  Get up and do something different  e.g.  make a cup of tea.
  10. Scalp massage is good but should only be done infrequently.
