Stress can bring about temporary hair loss

If you are experiencing or recovering from a stressful period in your life then you may become aware of excessive hair shedding. 

To understand what is happening it may be helpful to consider how hair is formed.

Hair is made from the formation of dead body cells which form at the base of the hair follicles, initially in a soft form.  As the cells accumulate and are forced along the follicle to the neck opening on the surface of the skin these harden into keratinised hair fibres, It is this growth which may be affected by extreme and/or prolonged periods of emotional stress or illness.

There are three main growth phases for hair: -

Anogen is the active growth phase and normally last for approximately 5 – 7 years. There are approximately 100,000 hair follicles on an average head.

Catogen is when the hair is getting ready to detach from the base of the hair follicle. It is not obvious when hairs are at this stage.

Telogen is when the hair becomes detached, is shed and falls away, leaving the hair follicle to rest before a new hair is formed.  Normal daily hair shedding can vary from approximately 50 to100 hairs.

If you have been or are suffering with stress this can trigger the hairs to move from the growth (Anogen) phase directly into the resting (telogen) phase with no prior sensation or irritation. The sudden shedding can understandably itself lead to stress which in turn can trigger a new phase of shedding.  This higher amount of shedding can be quite alarming as significant amounts of hair are then seen on clothing, bedding or in the shower.  This is more produced for people with long hair


You can make the hair shedding much worse by over-examination or excessive massaging of the scalp as this will loosen hairs before their normal time to be naturally shed.  Or it may be that you have stopped shampooing because you think that this will reduce your hair shedding but this has no effect on hair shedding as the telogen hairs still become detached from the base of the hair follicles, remain loose on the scalp and the larger numbers appear to fall out once the hair is washed or handled.

Dimples Human Hair False Eyebrows - Style 25

These false eyebrows are incredibly easy to apply. 

Simply prior to application for the brows you will need to make sure that the brow area is clean and dry. Using tweezers to hold the brow, apply one thin layer of brow glue. 

 Aim not to apply any glue at the edges of the see-through backing of the brow. Wait for approximately 3-5 minutes for the glue to turn transparent. You can then repeat with a second thin layer. 

Immediately follow this by applying a thin layer of glue to the desired area you wish to position the brow on your face. Wait again for approximately 3-5 minutes and finish by carefully positioning each eyebrow onto the desired area with your tweezers. Press down onto the eyebrow only when you are completely happy that the position is correct. 

Any excess glue showing, you can simply remove using a cotton bud dabbed in warm water. 

If these brows are looked after properly, they should last up to four months. One application of glue should last up to three days. This will depend upon your own skins acidity and oil levels.

Why do you need to care for your wig?

Did you know we lose the most body heat through our head and this is also where we perspire? Our hair usually absorbs this and normal grooming removes any build-up of natural sebum along with dead skin and dirt from the environment.  For those wearing a wig or toupee, however, this build up is absorbed onto the wig or toupee foundation. If not washed or cleaned regularly this can also result in a build -up of bacteria on the hairpiece with resulting odour and eventually damage to the fabric through rotting, which affects the appearance and reduces the life of the hairpiece.

Cleaning is therefore important and whether human hair or fibre the piece has to be treated differently to your own hair.  Normal hair products are designed for your hair, which is naturally grown, these are not appropriate for wigs or toupees. Equally you would not expect to use products designed for wigs on your own hair.

There are specific wig shampoos available which cleanse the hair and the foundation of the piece and conditioners which help reduce static and slow down the build of environmental dirt. For fibre pieces, there are specific oils to be applied after washing and drying to minimise friction damage. For styling, there are also sprays and gels. Solvents are also available to help remove residue from glue or double-sided toupee tape.
