Exam time - Stress related hair thinning
You are working hard at your studies with the end result being an examination and then you start to notice your hair not looking or feeling as it did. You find more hairs left in the shower tray and on your clothes and finally your hair does not feel as thick as it was. This sudden thinning is known as Telogen effluvium or reflective hair loss.
This condition is triggered when any or all of the following occur: poor dietary habits; anxiety; emotional or physical stress . The result of these triggers is that a higher percentage of hair follicles than usual are tripped into the resting phase (hair going into a dormant period) prematurely . Instead of a normal 2% of hairs becoming dormant, this can increase to around 50%. and, once in this resting phase, hairs will fall out.
This condition is not usually permanent and once the triggers are identified and removed the hair will start to regrow. However, you must remember that hair only grow at approximately ½ inch per month (6” per year).
