Bleach is a chemical used to lighten the pigment in the hair. The bleach should be non-toxic, mild in action and free from harmful residue. 

To be effective, bleach needs a ready supply of oxygen. The most common source of this oxygen is hydrogen peroxide, a colourless, oily liquid. In order for the bleach to remain in contact with the hair it must not be watery. 

Various agents are added to the bleach, such as emulsions, powders and oils to make the bleach more pliable in its application. Also boosters and activators may be added to these agents to increase the speed of the reaction.
