How to get rid of Head Lice

A good weekly routine is helpful in looking for and dealing with any infestation especially during the start  of the school term:-

  • Shampoo hair by following instructions on the shampoo product.
  • Condition the hair, again as instructed, but before rinsing off the conditioner use a fine tooth comb on the hair. Taking small sections of the hair in turn, start at the roots of the hair and draw the comb slowly through to the ends.
  • Check the comb for lice, making sure you wipe the comb onto paper towelling after every draw through. Check the comb for lice before returning it back onto the hair and bin the contaminated paper towelling in a plastic bag, using  fresh towel each time you draw through, so that you are not re-infesting the head.
  • Once you have thoroughly and methodically worked through each fine section, rinse well and then apply a leave-in conditioner.
  • If you have found evidence of infestation, then you will need to repeat this procedure two to three times per week until and, once clear, it is advisable to do a check once a week. There are proprietary head lice shampoos which can be purchased over the counter and must be used exactly as directed but use of these is not a substitute for combing as the shampoo will kill the active lice but not remove or destroy the eggs. Over use of shampoo products also diminishes their effectiveness.
  • It might be worth considering make this a fun game for your child to undertake by seeing how many ‘little friends’ they can catch if they use the fine tooth comb themselves.
  • If you are treating a family member for infestation then it sensible to check all family member, including yourself.
